From the influence of a pioneering mentor to decades spent nurturing young minds, John Bromley’s path to becoming a full-time artist has been anything but conventional. Now based in North Canterbury, John channels his deep connection to the natural world into vivid, semi-abstract landscapes that speak to both emotion and environment.
John Bromley’s journey as an artist began under the guidance of one of New Zealand’s most celebrated creatives, Yvonne Rust.
Yvonne mentored John for four years while he attended Christchurch West High School, and her passion for pushing artistic boundaries left a lasting impression. “She encouraged me to think differently and take risks with my artwork,” he says.
Years later, when Creative New Zealand commissioned a biography of Yvonne, Maverick Spirit, John was invited to contribute memoirs. He was honoured to have a full page in the book, along with photographs.
Although Yvonne had encouraged him to attend art school, John chose a different path, becoming a primary school teacher. He went on to excel in teaching gifted and talented students and later became a principal.
John has been working as a full-time artist since 2005. He lives in Rangiora, North Canterbury, where he owns and runs a stand-alone studio, which is open to the public. He has successfully exhibited throughout New Zealand, and his works are held in many private collections both nationally and internationally.
Inspired by the natural environment, John aims to capture the spirit of the landscape in his paintings. “My semi-abstract Dreamscapes explore vivid light, vibrant colour and texture. The palette knife has been used extensively, creating blends and effects directly onto the canvas.”
As an active member of Arts Canterbury, John regularly showcases his work in exhibitions organised by the committee. He is currently looking forward to the Russley Retirement Village Exhibition, held 23–25 May. “I will be entering a number of my original Dreamscapes paintings based on the natural environment, plus framed prints of my original works.”
