Garden Magic in a Bottle

General Interest

The project began with a single worm farm using food scraps from the village kitchen, carefully tended by The Russley gardening team. Under their stewardship, the worms have flourished, prompting the addition of a second worm farm in the Community Garden area. By maintaining consistent feeding and care, the worms stay healthy and active, steadily producing nutrient rich worm tea.

“We’re very proud of our worm farms. It feels good to turn waste into something useful, and our small worm farms have motivated not only us but the wider Russley team to get involved. Every little bit helps. Our next step is harvesting worm castings, which will be even more beneficial for our gardens” – Amanda & Shaeron, The Russley Village Gardeners.

The Russley Worm Tea is now bottled on site using recycled 600ml water bottles. Residents can collect a bottle for a gold coin donation, with all proceeds going to the SPCA, thoughtfully pairing environmental care and community generosity. Once used, the bottles are simply recycled again, keeping the loop circular and waste-free.

What makes this initiative special is not just the fertiliser itself, but the spirit behind it: a willingness to experiment, to learn, and to share knowledge. The Russley Garden team has become a source of worm wisdom for curious residents, demonstrating how even small-scale composting systems can support healthier gardens and reduce organic waste.

It’s a reminder that sustainability doesn’t always require large infrastructure or complex technology. Sometimes, it starts with a handful of worms, a dedicated team, and a community willing to give new ideas a go.
