There was a time when fresh locally sourced food was readily accessible, your milk was delivered in bottles to your doorstep and eggs collected from the farm down the road.  Overtime, scale and distribution has reshaped the way we acquire food. Supermarkets became the default, often offering little visibility of where products are grown or how far they have travelled, with pork from Denmark appearing on plates almost unnoticed.

Today, that connection is quietly returning, not as nostalgia, but as a practical response to the pace of modern life, changing mobility, and a growing preference for food that feels more transparent, better in quality, and closer to its source. Producers, in turn, are adapting by engaging more directly with customers, responding to an increasingly streamlined and responsive food system.

Food That Comes to the Village

At The Russley Village, farm‑gate style deliveries have become an established part of village life over the past year. Local producer Anson Farm now delivers more than 300 free‑range eggs to residents each week, and the PNP Farm butchery truck offers regular access to fresh meat and small goods.

Residents have welcomed both initiatives for their convenience and quality, but also for the reassurance that comes with knowing who produced their food and where it came from. 

The relationship goes beyond a transaction; the PNP Farm butcher has even hosted a resident workshop on how best to cook meat using an air fryer, adding a social and educational layer to the experience.

Alongside these regular visits, residents are also making use of a growing range of flexible options, from fresh avocados delivered directly from growers to subscriptions for seasonal or ‘wonky’ vegetables that do not always meet supermarket cosmetic standards. 

Many of these services offer customisable schedules or one‑off deliveries, reflecting how local food is becoming increasingly accessible through direct‑to‑consumer models that are adaptable and convenient.

Local Farmers’ Markets 

At The Foundation in Parnell, access to fresh food takes a different but equally meaningful form. The Parnell Farmers’ Market sits quite literally at the village’s front door, offering residents easy, walkable access to seasonal produce and locally made food.

Beyond the produce itself, the market is as much about routine and connection, a place to see familiar faces, have a coffee, and stock up on fruit, vegetables, meat, flowers, bakery and deli goods, bought directly from the people who grow and make them.

Similar principles apply across village food and beverage operations. While larger food distributors remain essential, Generus Living villages also prioritise relationships with local producers where possible. These arrangements balance operational reliability with values‑led sourcing, keeping local connections visible within everyday operations.
