Chasing Light: Amanda Wium’s Artistic Journey

General Interest

After recently relocating from South Africa to New Zealand, local artist Amanda Wium found fresh inspiration in the country’s unique light and atmosphere. “Light and its effects on colour fascinate me, and trying to capture that keeps me humble!”

She began painting around 20 years ago while completing a variety of art courses and classes, both online and in person. “I love a more painterly, impressionistic style with visible brushstrokes.” Amanda and her husband followed their two sons to Canterbury last year, from a small coastal town in South Africa. The couple are currently based in Kaiapoi, conveniently close to both their son’s families, providing plentiful time with the grandchildren.

The move has not only brought her closer to family but also reignited her artistic focus. She joined Arts Canterbury to connect with like-minded people and was impressed with the New Zealand art scene. “What has struck me most is how active and engaged everybody is and how generous they are with sharing knowledge,” she says. “The art scene here is much more vibrant than I was used to.”

Amanda finds inspiration from photographs and prefers to work mostly in acrylics – often adding in other media at later stages. This will be her first time exhibiting at the Arts Canterbury Art Show. “For this event, I decided to concentrate on smaller works, featuring florals and animals, and I might also include some intimate landscapes.”

She is excited to share her work with a new audience and continue growing as part of Canterbury’s creative community. Follow Amanda on Instagram: @amandawium_artist
