Debbie Scott’s artistic journey came full circle when she returned to her first love after over two decades – painting.

During high school, she had a passion for painting, and in 1997, she graduated with a media arts degree from university. "She reflects, 'After art school, I lacked the confidence to pursue painting as a career. So, I ventured into graphic design, a profession which fit my role as a mother for the next 25 years.”

While this was an excellent and creative career choice, Debbie tried to paint a few times when her kids were younger, but it was always put on pause until five years ago when she painted her husband a copy of Van Gogh for Christmas. “It really ignited joy and I thought, I have to get back into this!”

Debbie has recently begun painting one of her favourite photos of her son when he was just two years old. “This was taken 21 years ago, and I'm only just painting it now! Painting was always my first love, and I'm thrilled to rediscover it.”

After refining her skills through dedicated practice, attending portrait classes, and painting outdoors, Debbie has reached a stage where she feels confident to paint whatever inspires her. She describes her style as bright, impressionistic, and purposely oversaturated.“Some of my work looks a bit like stained glass. But it’s constantly evolving. Over the past year, I’ve been trying to push myself even further away from realism into impressionism.”

Debbie held her first exhibition last year at the Cashmere Club and next month will be her first time exhibiting at The Russley Village. “I’m super excited and really looking forward to coming together with all the other artists and meeting some of the residents and staff at the village.”
